About This SORA Renewal Class

Keep your NJ security guard license active with this mandatory 8-hour SORA renewal class in East Orange. This recertification course covers both armed and unarmed security officer renewal and is taught by Delano Ellis, a certified SORA instructor registered with the New Jersey State Police.

Under SORA regulations, unarmed security officers must renew every 2 years and armed officers every year. Start your renewal at least 90 days before your certification expires.

How to Take This Renewal Class

Delano Ellis may offer this SORA renewal in the following formats — contact them to confirm current availability:

  • Live online via Zoom: One-day, 8-hour session. Camera required. Attend from anywhere.
  • Classroom session: In-person training in New Jersey. Ideal for hands-on learners.

What’s Covered in the Renewal

The 8-hour curriculum refreshes your knowledge on all NJSP-mandated topics:

  • SORA Regulation Updates — changes to NJ security officer laws since your last certification
  • Use of Force Review — refresher on the NJ Attorney General’s policy, recent case studies, and de-escalation
  • Emergency Procedures — updated response protocols, active threat scenarios, and evacuation procedures
  • Professional Standards — ethics review, conduct expectations, and industry best practices
  • E-SORA Transition — the new Electronic SORA ID system replacing physical cards (as of November 2024)
  • Armed Officer Refresher — firearms law updates and responsibilities (for armed renewal students)

Step 3: Complete Fingerprinting (if required)

Depending on your renewal cycle, you may need to complete updated fingerprinting through IdentoGo.

  • Unarmed certification: Valid for 2 years from issue date
  • Armed certification: Valid for 1 year — annual renewal required
  • Best practice: Begin your renewal process 90 days before expiration
  • Expired license? You may lose your renewal eligibility and have to retake the full 24-hour initial course at a higher cost
  • Legal risk: Working as a security officer with an expired SORA credential violates New Jersey state law

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I renew my SORA online from East Orange?
Yes — many instructors offer virtual renewal classes via Zoom. Contact Delano Ellis to confirm online availability.

My license expired — can I still take the renewal?
No. If your SORA license has expired, you’ll likely need to complete the full 24-hour initial course. Contact the instructor for guidance on your specific situation.

How far in advance should I start my renewal?
Ideally 90 days before expiration. This gives you time to complete the NJSP application, schedule the class, and handle any fingerprinting requirements.

Is this for armed or unarmed renewal?
This renewal course covers both armed and unarmed recertification. Your renewal type is determined by your NJSP application.

What is E-SORA?
Starting in late 2024, New Jersey is replacing physical SORA cards with Electronic SORA IDs (E-SORA). This digital credential system is covered in the renewal curriculum.

Class Registration & Attendance

By registering for a SORA training class, you agree to attend all required hours as mandated by the New Jersey State Police. NJSP policy does not allow partial attendance — if you miss any portion of the class, you will need to complete the full course in a future session.

  • Registration is confirmed after payment is received
  • Punctuality is required — class begins at the scheduled time
  • Virtual students must maintain an active webcam and distraction-free environment
  • If you cannot attend your scheduled date, contact Delano Ellis to arrange a new session
  • Class materials and joining instructions will be provided prior to the start date

Refund Policy

Cancellation & Refund Terms

Delano Ellis strives to be flexible with scheduling changes. If you need to cancel or modify your enrollment:

  • Full refund: Available if requested 72 hours or more before the scheduled class date
  • Reschedule or partial refund: Available for cancellations made 24-72 hours before class
  • Same-day cancellations and no-shows: Not eligible for refund, though rescheduling may be offered at the instructor's discretion

All refund requests must be communicated directly to the instructor. State and fingerprinting fees are paid to separate agencies and are beyond the instructor's control.

Cancellation / Return / Exchange Policy

Rescheduling & Cancellation

If you need to reschedule your SORA class, contact Delano Ellis as early as possible. One complimentary reschedule is typically available per enrollment, subject to class availability. Repeated no-shows may forfeit your enrollment.

Instructor cancellations: In the rare event that a class must be cancelled by the instructor (weather, emergency, minimum enrollment not met), all registered students will be offered a full refund or priority placement in the next available session.

Important NJSP deadline: Remember that your NJSP application expires 30 days from the date issued. If you reschedule close to your deadline, you may need to reapply with the State Police. Plan accordingly.
