Frequently Asked Questions

My license expired — can I still take the renewal?
No. If your SORA license has expired, you’ll likely need to complete the full 24-hour initial course. Contact the instructor for guidance on your specific situation.

How far in advance should I start my renewal?
Ideally 90 days before expiration. This gives you time to complete the NJSP application, schedule the class, and handle any fingerprinting requirements.

Is this for armed or unarmed renewal?
This renewal course covers both armed and unarmed recertification. Your renewal type is determined by your NJSP application.

What is E-SORA?
Starting in late 2024, New Jersey is replacing physical SORA cards with Electronic SORA IDs (E-SORA). This digital credential system is covered in the renewal curriculum.

Will my employer know if my license expires?
Security companies are required to verify that their officers hold valid SORA certifications. An expired license can result in immediate removal from your post.
